Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus)

Male Stag Beetle feeding on an apple.

The large Stag Beetle in the pictures above was found by my youngest son, on the 14/06/12 Or should I say the stag beetle found him. My son was driving his van when he felt something on his shoulder only to see this large beetle sat looking at him. It must have been a shock if it were my daughter she would have probably crashed her car. He placed it in his work colleagues lunch box, which pleased his friend.  After filming the male stag beetle I returned it inside a suitable rotten tree in the New Forests with half an apple for its troubles. Earlier the same day I did find a female walking along a pavement which I picked up and placed on a tree, avoiding the females stronger jaws. If I had known I could have filmed the pair together.
