Scarce Merveille du jour Moth

Seeing one of these very pretty moths for the first time is something I will never forget, because of its very striking marbled blue-green and black markings. Its beautiful markings look like lichen so it is has excellent camouflage resting on a tree. It hibernates as pupae during the winter and its wingspan is up to 35mm and on the wing from May to September depending on its location. Very uncommon which can only be found in few mature deciduous woodlands in the South of England. The caterpillars which feed gregariously when young feed mainly on oak, also Beech and Birch.
