Red Admiral Butterfly (Vanessa Atalanta)

I always enjoy seeing these large strong powerful flying butterflies feeding on the flowers of my buddleia bush in my garden during the summer and late afternoon they pitch on the side of my house catching the last rays of the sun.

A migrant species with a wide range over the UK, with a single brood and sometimes over-wintering occurs in the far south of England. As well as my buddleia I have photographed this beautiful Butterfly feeding in large numbers on heather’s in the New Forest and later in the year feeding on over-ripe blackberries at a local Quarry.
Caterpillars feed on a variety of plants the most primarily on Common Nettle.
