Pyramidal Orchid by Andy

Pyramidal Orchid

(Anacamptis Pyramidalis)

Location: Grassy Chalk hill downs of Farley Mount, near Winchester, Hampshire UK.

Easily distinguishable with its pyramid shaped head of bright pink flowers from which it gets its name, each flower has a long spur. The photographs above were taken on chalk hill grasslands of Farley Mount; can also be found on limestone grasslands. This Orchid relies on a specific fungus in the soil for nourishment so the plant can flower. Found from June to August throughout the UK except Scotland. Andy Newman Images©
