Pyramidal Orchid by Andy

Pyramidal Orchid

(Anacamptis Pyramidalis)

Location: Grassy Chalk hill downs of Farley Mount, near Winchester, Hampshire UK.

Easily distinguishable with its pyramid-shaped head of bright pink flowers from which it gets its name, each flower has a long spur. The photographs above were taken on chalk hill grasslands of Farley Mount; can also be found on limestone grasslands. This Orchid relies on a specific fungus in the soil for nourishment so the plant can flower. Found from June to August throughout the UK except for Scotland. Andy Newman Images©
