Brimstone Butterfly (Gonepteryx Rhamni)

As a keen landscape photographer every spring I look forward to photographing bluebells, it is also the time Brimstone butterflies which are the first butterflies to hatch from adult hibernation and start feeding on bluebell flowers. So it is always a good opportunity to try and photograph both. You have to see one of these butterflies up close to see how attractively marked they are with beautiful leaf-shaped wings with angled strong veining on the wings. It rests with its wings closed which adds to its brilliant camouflage. The male brimstone has sulphur-yellow forewings and hindwings with an orange central spot, the female is similar but a pale green. The caterpillars feed on Buckthorn.

Common in Europe and North Africa.
