I found this interesting black ants nest under a paint tin lid in a forest clearing at Farley Mount in Hampshire. The ants are probably (Lasius Niger) It shows the ants at all stages of development.
What was amusing and surprised me was how few frames on my camera it took for the ants to collect the larvae, pupae and cocoons. Carrying them into tunnels underground as I had disturbed them. It was like watching a speeded-up film. I wished later I had filmed a movie.
